Indications/Uses
Induction & maintenance of general anesth in adult & ped patients for inpatient & outpatient surgery.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Individualized dosage. Maintenance dose: 0.5-3% w/ or w/o concomitant use of nitrous oxide.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to halogenated agents. Known or suspected susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia.
Special Precautions
Not to exceed 2 MAC·hr at flow rates 1 to <2 L/min. Not recommended at fresh gas flow rates of <1 L/min. Renal insufficiency (creatinine >1.5 mg/dL). Glycosuria & proteinuria at low flow rates. Known sensitivity to volatile halogenated anesth agents. Not recommended in concomitant use w/ KOH containing CO2 absorbents. Patients w/ congenital long QT syndrome or taking QT interval-prolonging drugs; underlying hepatic conditions or under treatment of drugs known to cause hepatic dysfunction. Malignant hyperthermia. Perioperative hyperkalemia especially in patients w/ latent & overt neuromuscular disease, particularly Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Seizures. Severe hepatic dysfunction. Pregnancy. Ped patients <1 yr. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Bradycardia, hypotension, tachycardia, HTN; agitation, somnolence, dizziness; laryngospasm, airway obstruction, breathholding, increased cough, apnea; increased salivation, nausea, vomiting; fever, shivering, hypothermia, movement, headache.
Drug Interactions
Decreased MAC w/ benzodiazepines & opioids. Decreased anesth requirement w/ nitrous oxide. Increased intensity & duration of neuromuscular blockade w/ nondepolarizing muscle relaxants eg, pancuronium, vecuronium or atracurium.
